The county of Yorkshire has a thriving tennis community. It hosts a number of annual tournaments and operates various leagues for players of all ages and abilities. A framework is also in place to encourage tennis in primary and secondary schools to coach the players of the future.

There are 25 different tennis leagues in Yorkshire and the many courts, both indoor and outdoor, offer players a chance to play on all surfaces including grass, clay, hard and carpet tennis courts.

Famous Players

A number of top tennis players hail from Yorkshire. Winning six singles and ten doubles titles during his illustrious career, the iconic Roger Taylor was born in Sheffield in 1941. Born in Beverley, the former British number one singles player Katie O’Brien started playing at the age of six, while Kyle Edmund, Davis Cup champion with Great Britain, was brought up in the village of Tickton after his family emigrated to the UK from South Africa when he was three years old. He trained at the David Lloyd Racquet and Fitness Club in Hull as a youngster.

Tournaments

Yorkshire hosts the ATP Challenger event, the Aegon Ilkley Trophy, at Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club – an important pre-Wimbledon tournament for men and women who rank in the world’s top 150.

There are plenty of tennis competitions taking place across Yorkshire for amateur players of all abilities. Among the popular tournaments are the Yorkshire Tennis Championships, South Yorkshire Area Tennis Championships and the Yorkshire Veterans’ County Closed Championship.

Schools Tennis

As part of a government initiative for physical education and school sport, Yorkshire’s primary and secondary schools take part in the Schools Tennis programme, providing opportunities for pupils of all standards at all schools.

Teachers can attend a number of courses at different venues to help them to deliver effective tennis lessons in school.
